How Dog Walking Works

I want you to feel completely comfortable with how your dog’s walks are handled, from the very first message through to the updates you receive afterwards.

  1. Initial chat: We start with a phone call, text or email so I can learn about your dog, their routine, any health issues and what you need help with.
  2. Meet & greet: I visit your home to meet you and your dog, see how they behave on lead, and discuss preferred walking routes, equipment and any triggers or worries.
  3. Access and keys: Together we agree how I will access your home (keys, lockbox, or someone being home) and where leads, harnesses and treats are kept.
  4. Scheduling walks: We confirm the days, times and walk length that suit your dog and your schedule. I am flexible and can often help at short notice.
  5. During the walk: Your dog is walked at their pace with time to sniff, toilet and enjoy the outing. I use calm handling and positive reinforcement with plenty of praise.
  6. After the walk: On return, I make sure your dog has fresh water and is settled before I leave.
  7. Updates for you: You receive a friendly update (and usually photos) by text or email so you know how the walk went, where we went and how your dog seemed.
Safety & Wellbeing on Walks

Your dog’s safety and wellbeing are always my top priority. I treat every dog as if they were my own and take a cautious, common-sense approach to every walk.

  • Handling different temperaments: Whether your dog is confident, shy, excitable or reactive, I adjust my pace and routes to help them feel safe. For nervous dogs we stick to quieter streets and build trust slowly.
  • Secure leads and harnesses: I use your dog’s usual lead and harness or collar, checking that they fit properly before we leave. I avoid equipment that could slip off or cause discomfort.
  • On-lead as standard: All dogs are walked on-lead. I do not use off-lead parks or dog beaches unless we have specifically agreed this in advance and I am completely confident it is safe.
  • Weather-aware walks: In hot or stormy weather I shorten or adjust walks, choose shaded routes and avoid hot pavements. If it is unsafe to walk, we discuss options such as a shorter toilet break and indoor engagement.
  • Health and age considerations: Puppies, seniors and dogs with medical conditions are walked gently, with plenty of breaks and close monitoring.
Why Regular Walks Matter

Regular, calm walks are about far more than just burning energy. They give your dog routine, mental stimulation and positive one-on-one time with a caring person.

  • Physical health: Gentle but consistent exercise helps maintain a healthy weight, supports joints and muscles, and can improve digestion.
  • Mental wellbeing: Sniffing, exploring and calmly experiencing the world helps reduce boredom and anxiety, especially for dogs left alone while you work.
  • Better behaviour at home: Dogs who are regularly walked and mentally occupied are often more relaxed and settled at home.
  • Support for busy or less mobile owners: If you work long hours, have health or mobility challenges, or simply need an extra hand, I step in so your dog does not miss out.
  • Consistency while you are away: When combined with home visits or pet sitting, walks keep your dog’s routine as normal and comforting as possible.
Dog Walking FAQs

Here are answers to some common questions about dog walking with Cockburn Pet Care.

Do you do group or solo walks?

Walks are usually one-on-one or with dogs from the same household, so I can give your dog my full attention. If you are interested in carefully matched walks with another dog, we can discuss what is safest and most appropriate.

Can you walk puppies or senior dogs?

Yes. Puppies and seniors often benefit greatly from short, gentle outings. For young pups, we keep walks brief and positive, following your vet’s guidance on vaccinations and exercise. For older dogs, we go at their pace, include plenty of sniffing time and avoid anything that could cause strain.

What happens in bad weather?

Safety comes first. In very hot, stormy or dangerous conditions, I may shorten or adjust the walk, choose shaded or sheltered routes, or swap to a shorter toilet break and some indoor engagement instead. I will always communicate with you about any changes.

What is your cancellation policy for walks?

I understand that plans change. Please let me know as soon as you can if you need to cancel or reschedule a walk. I keep things fair and reasonable and will explain any cancellation terms when we first chat so there are no surprises.

Do you walk reactive or anxious dogs?

In many cases, yes. We start with a careful meet & greet to understand your dog’s triggers and limits. I then choose quiet routes, give extra space around other dogs and people, and use calm, patient handling. If I ever feel a walk is not safe or in your dog’s best interests, I will discuss options with you.
